By Diane M., Massapequa I'm 52. I live in Massapequa, I've worked the same job for nineteen years, I have two kids who are mostly grown, and about two years ago my body started doing things I did not sign up for. The hot flashes came first. Not the kind you joke about — the kind that wake you up at 2 a.m. soaked through your shirt, heart pounding, completely disoriented. Then came the sleep problems. Then the mood stuff. Then a kind of bone-deep exhaustion that no amount of sleep seemed to fix. I was irritable in a way that embarrassed me. I felt like I was running on fumes and everyone around me was somehow... fine. I went to my doctor. She was kind. She explained what was happening, gave me some options, and I tried a few things. Some helped a little. Nothing helped enough. I still felt like I was white-knuckling my way through every week. A friend from my neighborhood kept mentioning acupuncture at a practice in Bethpage. I'd smile and nod. I wasn't against it exactly. I just didn't really believe it would do anything for this. This felt too physical. Too hormonal. Too big for needles. She kept mentioning it. Finally, sometime last spring, I made an appointment. Jennifer sat longer than I expected at that first visit. She asked about my sleep, my stress, my digestion, my cycle history, what my days actually looked like. Not in a checklist way — in a conversation way. She wasn't in a hurry. That was the first thing that surprised me. She didn't promise me anything dramatic. She was honest — she said some people respond quickly, some take more time, and we'd figure out what my body needed as we went. I appreciated that. I'd been oversold on things before. The first few sessions, I mostly just felt... relaxed. Which sounds minor, but honestly, I hadn't felt genuinely relaxed in over a year. I started sleeping a little better. Not perfectly. But better. Jennifer used a few different things over the course of my treatments — acupuncture, ATP therapy, which uses frequency to support the body's own healing, and electro-acupuncture, where a gentle current runs between certain needles. I'd been nervous about that one but it honestly just felt like a mild tapping sensation. She also introduced ozone therapy, which I'd never heard of — it helps with inflammation and supports tissue recovery. She explained everything before she did it. By week six or seven, the hot flashes were coming less often. Not gone — but less. I was waking up once a night instead of two or three times. When you've been miserable for months, that kind of shift feels enormous. By three months in, people at work were asking if I'd done something different. My husband said I seemed more like myself. The sleep got significantly better. The mood evened out — gradually, not all at once. Some weeks were still harder than others. Jennifer never oversold it. She just kept adjusting, kept paying attention. That consistency mattered more than I expected. I still go — less often now that things have leveled off, but I keep going because I can feel the difference when I don't. It's maintenance, and I've made peace with that. I wish I'd gone sooner. Not because it was magic. It wasn't magic. It was careful, consistent care from someone who actually listened — and treatments that did something real. That turned out to be exactly what I needed.
